Should You Be Using a Flea Collar For a Cat

As spring time rolls around each year, the annual problem for many cat owners then becomes their efforts to dealing with fleas on their furry little friends. One thing that a lot of people use that they think is a good idea is to use a cat flea collar. Now there are a lot of people who might tell you otherwise because they have used flea collars or because it is something they believe works without any side effect, but in the vast majority of cases, flea collars are not really all that safe to be used on cats.

A flea collar works in one of two different ways. First, it might be emitting a gas from itself that is going to be toxic to the fleas and kills them if they get close to the head of the cat or keeps them away from the head, or second, it might be injecting some chemicals in to the cats skin that will be fatal to the fleas when they bite down on the cat.

However, a lot of times these chemicals themselves are organophosphates or they are carbamates and are toxic to the cat as well. The toxic aspect of the flea collars can also heavily affect the cat and makes things a lot more difficult for your pet. Your cat may start vomiting, have trouble breathing, start drooling around the house, feel a lot of twitches in their muscles, become weak and lose weight, or in the more extreme cases they might become paralyzed or end up dying. The cat can very easily end up ingesting the chemicals while they are grooming themselves. This is even more likely because the collar can often end up irritating the skin of the cat.
